Support expanding DC’s sick leave law by joining DC’s first Carrotmob!

This Saturday morning, join DCFPI and hundreds of other District residents as we “Carrotmob” a local eatery for giving paid sick days to its employees!

Almost two years ago, the District passed the Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act, which provides between three and seven days of paid sick and safe leave to many District workers. However, some workers were excluded, including tipped restaurant workers. This means that servers and bartenders do not have a right under the law to take a sick day when they are not feeling well. Several local groups, including the DC Employment Justice Center and Restaurant Opportunities Center DC, have partnered to put together DC’s first-ever “Carrotmob” to educate workers about the law and highlight those workers who are excluded.

So what is the “Carrotmob?” Carrotmob derives comes from the phrase, “use the carrot, not the stick.” It’s an organized event, in which consumers use their buying power to reward businesses with good business and employment practices and focus attention on them.

Teaism was chosen in a popular vote from among six District eateries who have agreed to comply with the District’s sick leave law, even though the law excludes tipped restaurant workers. Teaism provides its workers between five and seven sick and safe leave days a year. The other businesses included Busboys & Poets, Freshii, Maoz, SEI, and Sticky Rice.
