“We’re taught as children, if we make a mistake, we own up to it, and we try to do better and right the wrong that we’ve caused. And what we saw is that the US House had that opportunity and chose not to right the wrong,” Mitchell said.

According to the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, 77% of those who need affordable housing in D.C. are extremely low-income, with only 39% of apartments available to those who fall into this category.
Erica Williams, the executive director of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, called the bill “an extreme act of federal interference in local affairs.”
“The federal government is certainly an important part of the D.C. economy and has been a buoy for us through tough economic times.” said Erica Williams, executive director of the D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute
“I feel like, for the most part, we had a good process with a respectable outcome,” Erica Williams says. “It’s unfortunate it’s been undermined in this way.”
