In her executive order, Mayor Bowser continued to give credence to Trump’s false claims about DC crime to justify the military escalation in which residents are being profiled, arrested, detained, and disappeared.
“It’s shameful that Mayor Bowser is willingly overriding the will of DC residents and eroding our right to self-governance, paving the way for an indefinite federal takeover,” said DC Fiscal Policy Institute’s Executive Director, Erica Williams. “Validating the federal incursion and the president’s rhetoric with this executive order sets the stage for a permanent police state that will leave DC residents even less safe than they have been since the takeover began.”
In an open letter, the DC Fiscal Policy Institute joined more than 100 organizations, churches, and unions in urging the mayor to denounce the takeover and insist on an end to the federal surge. The past three weeks of increased federal law enforcement during Trump’s proclaimed “emergency” have enabled unchecked violations of civil and constitutional rights that all local leaders in the District should be working to end.
