Statement from Qubilah Huddleston, DCFPI Education Policy Analyst, on the Passing of WTU President Elizabeth Davis

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Washington Teachers Union (WTU) President Liz Davis. This is a tragic loss, and the aftershocks will continue to be felt by all of us who advocate for and serve the District’s students and families.

“Liz set a high bar and was an example for all of us to be fierce in the pursuit of educational equity. She regularly called on District leaders to actively undo the harm of past and present public policies on Black and brown youth especially, and never wavered in her demand that Black educators and administrators be treated with dignity and respect.

“As we continue to grieve in the days and months to come, we at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute will continue to work alongside the WTU to ensure that our city’s leaders fairly fund DC Public Schools and adopt policies and practices that are student- and family-centered.

“Our thoughts are, and will continue to be with Liz’s family, friends, and the members of the Washington Teachers Union during this difficult time.”
